Good evening. I’m Frank Heavey, the Executive Director of Expect Miracles Foundation. We are incredibly honored to be the charity partner for tonight’s Mutual Fund and ETF awards, and very grateful to With Intelligence for this opportunity to speak to you tonight.
Think about all the people in your life who have heard the bone-chilling words, “You have cancer.” I have heard a doctor say that terrifying statement to my mom, my dad, and my wife. We have all been impacted in some way by cancer. Our Founder and Chairman, Frank Strauss, started EMF in 1995 as a way to bring the financial services industry together to give hope to those who have heard those 3 words.
I invite you to make a donation that is meaningful to you – an investment in hope that will have an impact today and for future generations. As Henry David Thoreau wrote in Walden: “Goodness is the only investment that never fails.”
We do this by investing in life-saving cancer research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Our Discovery Fund and Innovation Fund support cancer research focused on 4 of the biggest challenges in cancer science:
1. Early detection
2. Real-time prognosis
3. Drug-resistant cancers
4. Metastatic cancer
And as we invest in research to help patients become cancer-free, we recognize that cancer isn’t free. No, it’s very expensive. And the demographic most vulnerable to the financial toxicity caused by cancer are young adults. EMF’s SAMFund grant program provides financial assistance to young adult cancer survivors to help with housing and car expenses, continuing education, reconstructive and dental procedures, as well as family building expenses such as fertility storage, IVF, surrogacy and adoption.
We are so grateful to be supported by over 100 of the leading financial firms who recognize that our galas, like Expect Miracles in Manhattan, and our golf tournaments, like our upcoming Atlantic Coast Classic at Fiddler’s Elbow in NJ, are great business opportunities that are also life-saving opportunities. And the industry’s support of the EMF Distance Challenge, our virtual fundraiser that this year brought together over 1,600 people from 23 countries to run, walk or bike to leave cancer behind, has been so inspirational in raising over $1M to fuel hope.
