Q&A with Matt Mackay, Former YPEM NYC President

Q&A with Matt Mackay, Former YPEM NYC President

New York City YPEM (Young Professionals Expect Miracles) Leadership Team President and founding member Matt Mackay, of JP Morgan, will be stepping down and handing over his duties after five impressive years. Matt’s long list of lasting impacts during his time include running the Boston Marathon on Team Expect Miracles, coining the term “Kanley Cup” (the trophy that is awarded to the city with the highest fundraising each year, inspired by YPEM’s annual Kan Jam Tournament), being a part of the Miracle Maker Leadership Council, and leading NYC YPEM to raise $165,521.

As Matt’s term as president comes to an end, I had the chance to speak with him about his experiences over the past 5 years and some of his favorite memories. I have been fortunate enough to be the YPEM Coordinator for 2.5 of those years and see Matt’s dedication firsthand. This was a bittersweet conversation as we reflected on the incredible impact he has had on Expect Miracles Foundation. Matt’s leadership will be greatly missed on NYC YPEM but we both look forward to his continued involvement as a supporter.

Matt, when did you first hear about Expect Miracles Foundation, and what inspired you to get involved and ultimately start the YPEM Leadership Team in NYC?

JP Morgan had been involved with Expect Miracles Foundation for many years and I had heard about it from several of my colleagues. My own family has been greatly impacted by cancer so it naturally sparked my attention and interest. I reached out to Maggie Dombroski about getting involved in New York City in 2015, but at the time there was only a YPEM team in Boston. The next time Frank Heavey and Maggie were visiting New York City they came by the JP Morgan office to meet with me. I learned more about Boston YPEM and felt that we could build that same model out and have success in New York City. The desire to contribute to the fight against cancer as well as engage in the financial services industry is what inspired me to take this on. After volunteering at Expect Miracles in Manhattan in early 2016 I was able to meet and rally other New York City young professionals and start planning our first event.

What has motivated you to continue to be a part of YPEM year after year?

To win the Kanley Cup of course! I witnessed what we could do starting from nothing. After just one event, the amount of funds raised continued to grow immensely. Despite not beating Boston yet, it doesn’t matter. The rivalry has forced us to be more competitive and raise even more each year.

What are you most proud of during your time as the President of the NYC YPEM Leadership Team?

When we first started NYC YPEM in 2016, we raised $4,802. Just three years later in 2019, NYC YPEM raised $63,155. I am extremely proud of the amount of growth and impact the NYC YPEM Leadership Team has made – we achieved something most would have thought very difficult, if not impossible, in such a short timeframe.

What is your favorite Expect Miracles Foundation memory?

Hands down, running the Boston Marathon on the 2019 Expect Miracles Team. Being a passionate runner and experiencing the crowd, while being surrounded by so many people who earned their spot, whether it was by qualifying time or by raising funds for something they cared about, was an incredible experience. It was also extra special for me as I was running in memory of my late high school track coach, and mentor, who had recently passed away after a short fight with cancer. I was very proud to be wearing the Expect Miracles Foundation jersey that day.

What are your hopes for the future of YPEM?

To take home the Kanley cup in NYC!  We’ve come so close and have such a great group of individuals in NYC YPEM that I know they will get us over the line.

Do you have any advice for future YPEM Leadership members or young professionals considering getting involved?

I would encourage anybody looking for a way to get involved with an organization that can benefit you professionally to build out your network, all while doing something good. There is no better organization to get involved with than Expect Miracles Foundation.

What is your favorite YPEM event?

The Annual Kan Jam and Cornhole Tournament. The turnout is always great and in turn we are able to make a large impact.

What has been your favorite Expect Miracles Foundation event?

The Atlantic Coast Classic golf tournament in New Jersey has been a great event for me, primarily given the location and groups I’ve had the pleasure to play with. This is such a fun day on the course enjoying time with friends and colleagues while supporting the fight against cancer. Playing at the West Coast Classic in 2019 at Torrey Pines through what felt like a tsunami comes in at a close second!

How do you hope to stay involved with Expect Miracles Foundation?

I plan to continue to be a part of the Miracle Maker Leadership Council and look forward to attending and volunteering at future Expect Miracles events.

Matt, we can’t thank you enough for your leadership over the past five years. You have truly made a lasting impact on Expect Miracles Foundation and those whose lives have been touched by cancer.
