25th Anniversary East Coast Classic Highlights

August 8, 2019

The weather was perfect on August 1 as Expect Miracles Foundation hosted more than 250 guests at the 25th Anniversary East Coast Classic at Pinehills Golf Course in Plymouth, MA. For the fifth straight year, the financial services industry, led by Foundation Sponsors BNY Mellon and Eagle Investment Systems, sold out both courses at Pinehills. Expect Miracles Foundation is extremely grateful for the support of its 24 Corporate Sponsors and the 15 firms that sponsored a hole at the tournament. With representatives from nearly 100 financial firms, the industry was out in force to support the Foundation’s life-saving mission.

After a great day on the links, guests enjoyed networking during a cocktail reception featuring an incredible raw bar and delicious lobster rolls. Frank Heavey, Executive Director of Expect Miracles Foundation thanked all the supporters for spending the day celebrating 25 years of this incredible event turning great business opportunities into life-saving opportunities. Frank kicked off the reception by thanking all the sponsors, and sharing the exciting news that as of July 1, The Samfund, a nonprofit that provides grants to young adult survivors for everyday expenses like rent, medical bills, and health and wellness, became a program of Expect Miracles Foundation. Frank introduced Samantha Watson, Founder of The Samfund and Managing Director of Stewardship at Expect Miracles Foundation, to share more about The Samfund, and what this merger means for both organizations.

Co-Founder and Chairman, Frank Strauss welcomed the guests and thanked them for their loyalty, taking a moment to reflect on the past 25 years, and how this journey began. Strauss told the emotional and heartwarming story of the beginning of Expect Miracles Foundation when he and his wife, Judy, welcomed their first child, Nicole, into the world. 3 months later his mother, Sandy Strauss was diagnosed with Acute Lukemia and was being treated at Dana-Farber. With a need to do something to help, Frank hosted the Inaugural Strauss Open raising $5,800 for the Jimmy Fund. Fast forward 25 years later, Expect Miracles Foundation has raised over $10 million dollars for Dana- Farber and has funded research that discovered life-saving drugs at both the Dana-Farber and Memorial Sloan Kettering.

Strauss gave Sandy Strauss a special recognition award for being the inspiration that help found this extraordinary organization. Sandy moved the crowd by thanking everyone for all they have done to help make Expect Miracles Foundation what it is today.

Frank Heavey spoke about the wonderful relationship Expect Miracles and Jimmy Fund Golf has shared for the past 25 years and introduced Suzanne Fountain, Associate VP of the Jimmy Fund. Fountain thanked everyone for supporting the life-saving missions of both Jimmy Fund Golf and Expect Miracles Foundation.

Next, Director of Development & Events, Maggie Dombroski recognized Frank and Judy Strauss with 25th Anniversary gifts of a personalized Frank and Judy Bobble Head to symbolize Frank's Boston sports celebrity status, and a Boombox Gift Box, a keepsake memory box filled with over 150 custom-printed messages and photos from supporters over the years. Maggie thanked Frank Strauss for the impact he has had over the past 25 years while creating miracles and helping more people expect miracles.

Heavey welcomed to the stage to announce the new Strauss Lifetime Achievement Award. Established in honor of Frank Strauss, this award is given in recognition of individuals who, throughout their career, have impacted countless lives with their vital and unwavering support of Expect Miracles Foundation. The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to its namesake, Frank Strauss.

Heavey also recognized and thanked the second supporter of Expect Miracles Foundation since the beginning. He has been an indispensable driving force in the development of the Board of Directors, and due to his longstanding support, the Strauss Lifetime Achievement Award was also given to Gary Enos, Vice Co-Chair of Expect Miracles Foundation's Board of Directors.

Next, Frank Heavey announced all the winners of the different contests from the day, and announced the upcoming Expect Miracles Foundation events, including the 2nd Annual Expect Miracles Atlantic Coast Classic in Bedminster NJ on September 24, 2019, and the 16th Annual Wine & Spirits Gala at The House of Blues in Boston on November 14, 2019.

The great event would not have been possible if not for the generous support of the army of volunteers who worked a long day, the incredible event partners, all our guests, sponsors and donors. Thanks for another great tournament in support of our mission! We hope to see you in Bedminster, NJ for the 2nd Annual Expect Miracles Atlantic Coast Classic on September 24!
