A Historic Night at Fenway
August 18, 2025 was more than just a game day in Boston. Before the Red Sox faced the Orioles, Expect Miracles Foundation [EMF] stood by home plate at Fenway Park for an unforgettable honor.
Alongside Dana-Farber Cancer Institute President and CEO Benjamin Ebert, MD, PhD, and Jimmy Fund Co-Chairmen Tom Carron and Brock Holt, Boston Red Sox President Sam Kennedy presented EMF with the Boston Red Sox Jimmy Fund Award, the Jimmy Fund’s highest recognition, in celebration of our longstanding commitment to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute [DFCI] and The Jimmy Fund. Fans at Fenway cheered as EMF Founder Frank Strauss, Executive Director Frank Heavey, and Director of Development Maggie Dombroski proudly received the award.
The Jimmy Fund’s Highest Honor
Since 1979, The Boston Red Sox Jimmy Fund Award has been presented annually to individuals and organizations demonstrating extraordinary dedication to the lifesaving mission of DFCI and The Jimmy Fund. This year, EMF joined the distinguished list of honorees, which include Eaton Vance, John Hancock, Pan-Mass Challenge, Ted Williams and Carl Yastrzemski.
This recognition not only celebrates our 30-year partnership with Dana-Farber Cancer Institute but also spotlights the thousands of donors, sponsors, and supporters who make our work possible.
From the Ball Field to the Broadcast: EMF’s Story
The award presentation kicked off the first day of the WEEI/NESN Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon. During the second inning, EMF’s Executive Director Frank Heavey appeared on NESN to share the story of the foundation’s impact to advance cancer research and provide financial support to young adult cancer survivors. When NESN play-by-play broadcaster Dave O’Brien asked Frank what he would say to someone who is on the fence about making a donation, Frank responded:
You’ll never regret making that investment. It’s an investment in people, it’s an investment in hope.
Frank Strauss’s Legacy of Impact
For Frank Strauss, the ceremony brought back memories of 2012, when he received the same award as an individual. This time, the organization he founded in 1995 was honored.
Flashback: 2012 Jimmy Fund Award
July 16, 2012 – Fenway Park
Frank Strauss was on the field at Fenway Park to receive the 2012 Boston Red Sox Jimmy Fund Award, the Jimmy Fund’s highest honor, in recognition for more than 17 years of unwavering support of The Jimmy Fund.
Presented by Red Sox President Larry Lucchino, the award underscored the fight against cancer that Strauss ignited, and his enduring commitment to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund, a commitment that only grew stronger in the years that followed. In its 30 years, EMF has awarded over $15 million in grants to Dana-Farber.
A Celebration with EMF Leadership
The celebration didn’t end on the field. Following the ceremony, there was a gathering in a Fenway Park hospitality suite, where some EMF Board Members and Board Member Emeriti came together with EMF Managers to mark this milestone. It was a special opportunity for our leadership – past and present – to reflect on how far EMF has come, and to share in the pride of receiving the Jimmy Fund’s highest honor.
