Expect Miracles Wine & Spirits 2018 Highlights

Wednesday, November 7, 2018

On November 7, 2018 at The House of Blues in Boston, MA, nearly 400 financial executives and their guests gathered to shine a Spotlight on a Cure. The evening showcased the importance of both individuals and companies supporting the cause, and how together we can raise hope and funds for a cure.

With support led by Foundation Sponsors BNY Mellon, Eagle Investment Systems, and ICE Data Services, guests traveled back in time to retro Hollywood for a star studded event featuring Frank Sinatra covers by George Lyons and Beatles hits by Studio Two. Attendees networked with old friends, new colleagues, and industry peers. Throughout the night guests had the opportunity to enjoy a tasting station by Del Frisco’s, purchase raffle tickets, bid on auction prizes and take a spin on the spin wheel, vying for prizes like a trip Las Vegas, a private Duck Boat, Patriots tickets, and more!

Guests turned their attention to the stage for the night’s speaking program. Event Co-Chairs Irene Speridakos, BNY Mellon, and Brian Shlissel, J.P Morgan Asset Management, kicked off the presentation, welcoming everyone and thanking all The Foundation’s sponsors. After an exciting live auction and tremendous support from the crowd, Executive Director Frank Heavey took the stage to remind everyone the importance of the funds being raised at the event. He shared the story of Leslie Duffy and her battle with non-small cell lung cancer. The drug Tagrisso, developed by the doctors at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Robert and Renée Belfer Center for Applied Cancer Science, saved Leslie’s life. But unfortunately, Leslie’s cancer mutated and returned and she lost her battle in August. Heavey shared with the crowd a note from Lesley’s husband Chris: “Lesley’s ordeal will help bring about a day when there is an alternative drug that the next Lesley can take if Tagrisso stops working.” The support from the night’s event will help Dana-Farber and the Belfer Center to continue to develop new solutions.

The generosity of the crowd was evident as guest texted in pledges to help Expect Miracles Foundation surpass their goal and raised over $23,000 in donations. Thank you to everyone for the support!

Founder and Chairman Frank Strauss came to the stage to thank the Miracle Maker Leadership Council and welcome Assistant Director Maggie Dombroski to recognize the accolades of Young Professionals Expect Miracles (YPEM). First Maggie presented the YPEM Award to Chelsea Gavitt, Income Research & Management, for all of her hard work and dedication to Expect Miracles Foundation. Next Maggie presented the Kanley Cup to the Young Professionals group from the city, Boston or New York, that was able to raise the most money this year. Congratulations to Boston for being back-to-back champs!

Frank Heavey returned to the stage to announce the Expect Miracles Award; which is the highest award given to an individual who goes above and beyond to donate or raise significant funds for Expect Miracles Foundation and the fight against cancer. The recipient of this honor was Jeff Duckworth from John Hancock Investments.

Frank Strauss returned to the podium to present two final recognitions. First, Eaton Vance Management was presented with The Foundation Award for its longstanding commitment to Expect Miracles Foundation in leading the financial industry in the noble fight against cancer. Finally, the evening concluded with a huge milestone. For the first time in The Foundation’s history, Frank Strauss presented a one million dollar check to the Jimmy Fund for The Robert and Renée Belfer Center for Applied Cancer Science at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, which was accepted by Dr. Pasi Janne of the Belfer Center.
