10th West Coast Classic Highlights

March 20, 2019

On March 20, 2019 Expect Miracles Foundation hosted its 10th West Coast Classic and welcomed over 100 golfers to Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla, CA. Expect Miracles Foundation was excited to once again be able to host the West Coast financial community for a wonderful day of golfing, networking and fighting cancer. Despite the epic rainstorm that passed through during tee off, golfers were eventually greeted by sunshine to take in the breathtaking views of the ocean along the course. The event’s success was greatly attributed to Foundation Sponsors BNY Mellon and Eagle Investment Systems as well as the 60+ other companies that sponsored and participated in the tournament.

After an afternoon of friendly competition on the links, golfers enjoyed an evening reception at The Lodge at Torrey Pines emceed by Steve Lyons former professional baseball player and current NESN sportscaster. To kick off the speaking program, Lyons shared how cancer has personally affected his own life emphasizing the hope we can all bring to cancer patients through supporting life-saving research. Frank Strauss, Founder and Chairman then took to the podium and reiterated Lyon’s thanks while sharing with attendees the record year Expect Miracles had in 2018, as the Foundation gave a record amount to cancer research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Strauss also shared Expect Miracles Foundation’s milestones for the year ahead as the Foundation will be celebrating its 25th Anniversary and most importantly, donating our 10th million dollar to life-saving cancer research in 2019.

After an exciting Live Auction, Frank Heavey, the Executive Director of Expect Miracles Foundation was welcomed to the podium where he presented the Expect Miracles Award to Neil Hennessy from Hennessy Funds. The Expect Miracles Award is the Foundation’s highest individual award that recognizes an individual who goes above and beyond to donate or raise significant funds for Expect Miracles Foundation and the fight against cancer. Neil Hennessy has supported the Foundation’s events for many years on the West and East Coasts and has always been tremendously generous in leading by example – thank you Neil!

Heavey then went on to share how cancer has affected his own life with both of his parents and wife having been diagnosed with the disease. He shared how important it is for everyone to pay it forward so new drugs and early detection technology can continue to be developed and help bring hope to patients and save the lives of loved ones. After showing a short video highlighting some of the Foundation’s supporters who have been impacted by cancer, attendees were encouraged to pledge a donation to help the fight against cancer. Through the extreme generosity of two anonymous donors, the $10,000 raised was matched, enabling Expect Miracles Foundation to raise over $30,000 through this fundraising initiative! We are extremely grateful to everyone who was able to participate, and especially grateful to the matching donors –thank you. It is with people like you, taking time out of your busy schedules for such an important cause, that together we inspire hope and ensure progress towards eradicating this horrible disease.
