October 23, 2014
Spanning both the Ocean South and Ocean North Course, Expect Miracles Foundation took over the Resort at Pelican Hill for an unforgettable day of golf on October 23rd in Newport Beach, CA. With support led by Foundation Sponsor Interactive Data Corporation, golfers from over 70 financial companies joined together to raise critical funds for the fight against cancer.
Upon arrival golfers were excited to see Tommy Bahama's onsite popup store as they were treated to a shopping spree, followed by breakfast compliments of The Bagel Shack. After the golfers teed off, they had an exhilarating day on the links with cocktail samplings from Double Cross Vodka and Goslings Rum, and a restaurant tasting provided by Tommy Bahama Island Grille. Two main on-course attractions were the 2015 Range Rover Sport SE and the 2015 Jaguar F-Type both up for grabs to anyone who sunk a hole-in-one, compliments of Newport Beach Jaguar & Land Rover.
When the 18 holes were completed, golfers gathered on the outdoor patio for the Sunset Cocktail Party. Founder & Chairman, Frank Strauss, announced the recipient of this year’s West Coast Classic Community Outreach initiative - The Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation (PCRF) in Irvine, CA. PCRF’s Executive Director Jeri Wilson explained their mission is to improve the care, quality of life and survival rate of children with malignant diseases. Jeri then introduced Dr. Diane Nugent, Division Chief and Medical Director, Hematology at the Children’s Hospital of Orange County, as she was chosen as the beneficiary of the funding award to continue her study on Li-Fraumeni Syndrome (LFS).
Steve Lyons served as emcee for the evening reception and hosted the live auction. Steve Lyons is a former 9-year veteran of Major League Baseball and a three-time national Emmy award-winning broadcaster. Expect Miracles Foundation was overwhelmed by the generosity displayed during the auction program featuring items such as Play and Stay package in Mexico, a trip to the Ritz Carlton Half Moon Bay in San Francisco, a Lake Tahoe getaway, and more. Steve did a great job getting the crowd to achieve record-breaking fundraising totals. The tournament’s 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place foursomes won prizes graciously donated by Tommy Bahama. The Poker Game winner, who held a Full House, won $5,500 Diamond Hoop Earrings, compliments of Carol Klein Fine Jewelry. The lucky Opportunity Drawing winner is heading to the Bahamas!
